What is the difference between a single skin and double skin tent?
With camping becoming ever popular and more people camping for one off events like festivals etc the market for small, cheap, quick pitch tents is ever growing with a wide range to choose from some are single skinned whilst some are double skinned so what is the difference and which is the one to suit your needs?
Single Skinned Tents
These are usually the cheapest in the ranges and certainly the most lightweight. They are exactly as described a tent made from a single layer of waterproof material. They are waterproof to varying degrees (the manufacturers spec will tell you this info). A single skinned tent will provide you with good protection from the elements and are ideal for mountaineering and winter use as they will keep drafts and snow out however you will find that inside will suffer from condensation and if you are not careful this will cause you sleeping bags and other gear to get wet
Double Skinned Tents
These tend to be more user friendly as you have a basic tent with a secondary inner tent. The inner tent is made form a breathable fabric that could also be waterproof giving double protection against the elements.
The space between the two layers creates ventilation and so cuts down on the condensation that you have inside the tent as the excess water is usually kept between the two layers. This will help keep all you contents warm and dry.
With scientific improvements in fabrics happening all the time double skinned tents are getting more and more efficient in keeping moisture to a minimum.
So as you can see from the above there is a big difference between the two and depending on the type of camping you are going to participate in you will need to choose between a single or double skinned tent.
